Midtown Hotel Surabaya
Groovy Room at Midtown Hotel Surabaya
The Midtown Hotel is a relatively new 3 star business hotel located in Central Surabaya, barely five minutes walk from Tunjungan Plaza, the city’s largest shopping centre. Since its opening in early 2012, Midtown Hotel has steadily gained reputation as a reasonably priced alternative to higher star (and also higher priced) hotels such as JW Marriott and Sheraton, both of which are also located in the vicinity.
Our crew had the opportunity to visit the Midtown twice in mid 2012 and early 2013, and on both occasions we found the facilities and service to be quite good. The hotel’s interior is modern and both rooms that we stayed in were decently sized and in clean condition. Each room is fitted with a flat screen TV with cable channels, and the bathroom is fitted with a shower. In-room amenities such as water kettle, tea and coffee are also provided, while free wifi is available hotel-wide. One downside regarding the room is that the door does not seem to insulate outside noise too well, and at night we could sometimes hear other guests chatting as they walked along the corridor.

Complimentary buffet breakfast for two is included in the room price. The buffet spread included Indonesian cuisine such as Nasi Goreng (fried rice) and Mi Goreng (fried noodle), Chinese style Chicken Porridge, as well as a Western spread of eggs, bread, cereal, and fruits. The food should be decent for the common traveller, unless one is very particular about the quality of one’s breakfast. Room service is not cheap, so we always leave the hotel to get our meals elsewhere. The easiest is to walk to Tunjungan Plaza and the nearby McDonald’s across it. There is also a themed food court called Eat and Eat nearby (in the building just before Tunjungan Plaza) which offers an array of traditional Indonesian and Asian delights, worth a visit for anyone keen to sample local dishes.

What we find to be Midtown’s biggest selling point is the room price. A night stay at one of the 5 star hotels in the area can easily cost more than IDR 1,000,000 (USD 102). For a similar location and rooms that are comparable to the competition, Midtown Hotel is charging an attractive promotional price of around IDR 500,000.
