Earthquakes hit Sumatra, Indonesia

11 April 2012 No Comment

Strong earthquakes have struck the Indonesian island of Sumatra earlier today (at around 3.38pm local time). According to a BBC report, a quake with a magnitude of 8.6 was the first to hit the province of Aceh, triggering tsunami alerts around the region. This was followed by another 8.3 magnitude quake several hours later.

Indonesian media Kompas.com reported that locals are fleeing to higher grounds to escape potential tsunamis and aftershocks. Electricity supply and telecommunication services to affected parts were also disrupted after the initial tremor. At the time of writing, most of the tsunami alerts have been lifted, and essential services such as electricity are progressively being restored.
