Kou Cuisine Ubud

If you are looking for some local Balinese food produce to be brought back home as a souvenir, consider dropping by Kou Cuisine at Jalan Monkey Forest. This store offers a selection of hand made jams, as well as other local specialties like honey, and herb infused sea salt from the Balinese village of Kusamba. Widespread usage of local fruits in their products resulted in some very interesting combinations, such as the strawberry & banana jam, as well as pineapple & guava jam.

Initially we worried about having a hard time guessing how the different combinations will taste like. Luckily free samples were provided in the store, so no guesses were needed after all. The store attendant welcomed us to try as many flavours as we like. We would say that most of the flavours offered tasted pretty good, and possessed that extra depth in taste that is often missing from supermarket-bought jams.

List of products available (from brochure obtained in store):

  • Mango Jam
  • Passion Fruit & Tangerine Jam
  • Pineapple & Guava Jam
  • Milk Caramel Jam
  • Strawberry & Banana Jam
  • Apple Cinnamon Jam
  • Kusamba Sea Salt
  • Kusamba Herb Sea Salt

There were also some products we saw in store that was not listed in the brochure:

  • Honey
  • Grape & Buni Jam

The various jam products are sold in small glass jars retailing at Rp.35,000 each (approximately USD 4, as of early 2010). While these may not be cheap, they make great and unique gifts; or can be something to bring home to remember Bali by.
