Wombat’s Hostel, Munich

21 April 2010 No Comment

Those seeking affordable accommodation in Munich need to look no further than the area surrounding the Hauptbanhof (main train station), an entry point for most visitors to the city. Based on recommendations in an online travel forum I picked the Wombat’s Hostel, which is situated on Senefelderstraße. The building and the room is very modern and clean (comparing to the few other hostels I’ve seen in Europe), with good amenities. The room I stayed in was shared by six persons, with three bunk beds, a small table and a shared toilet. Male and female guests can share the same room, but it doesn’t bother me. The hotel is quite packed with guests, most of whom are young travelers. I also had the chance to use their laundry machine and the coin operated internet PC. This place is very well managed.

An additional good point with any hotel located near city centre is that like in most other German cities, the train station is located smack in the center of town, together with most points of interest. For everything else there is the subway. In the case of Munich, I could easily walk from the hotel to the Marienplatz, the Bavarian State Chancellery, and the English Garden (Englischer Garten) for sightseeing. And after a long night at the Hofbräuhaus, I did walk back with a new-found friend (he stayed in a neighboring hotel – this is an added plus with so many travelers staying around the same area). The only downside of being so near the Hofbräuhaus and staying in a shared room is that you might end up with little sleep. (The first night there my company was three very drunk Americans who were on their last night in Munich, who returned to the room at 3 a.m., and spent the rest of the night discussing their next travel plans).

Overall the Wombat’s is a good place to stay, and is thoroughly recommendable for anyone, especially those with a budget in mind.
